This photo shows beets interplanted with onions emerging between rows of one-year old dwarf sweet cherry trees. Each cherry tree is supported by a black pole. Interplanting short-lived crops among young orchards is considered intensive planting in our area. Most growers do not use the land between rows of young trees. Some growers believe that competition from the interplanted crop delays orchard production by a year or more, but we haven't noticed such delays. There are more examples of intensive planting in other 2001 photos.
