This photo shows young strawberries emerging between rows of newly-planted peaches. Plastic mulch is visible warming the soil on a field in the background. Later in 2001, watermelon was transplanted through the mulch into the warm soil. Interplanting short-lived crops among young orchards is considered intensive planting in our area. Most growers do not use the land between rows of young trees. Some growers believe that competition from the interplanted crop delays orchard production by a year or more, but we haven't noticed such delays. There are more examples of intensive planting in other 2001 photos.
