Full Time Summer Positions

We seek responsible people for a variety of jobs at Quiet Acres. A sampling of jobs and expectations are outlined below. This is not an exhaustive list, nor would the candidate necessarily have the opportunity to do all these tasks. Besides weather conditions and season, the daily task profile would depend on experience, confidence, agricultural background, and ability to learn quickly.

• field preparation for planting
• planting, pruning and thinning of fruit trees
• planting, cultivating, and manually hoeing fields of vegetables
• picking vegetables and fruits
• sorting, grading, and packing fruits and vegetables
• administering temporary employees
• customer service at our retail outlet
• operation of modern machinery (qualification dependent) doing such tasks as:
  • mowing grass in orchards, on the headlands and lawn areas
  • spreading manure
  • cultivating, ploughing and discing fields
  • operation of hydraulic equipment
  • a willingness to apply crop protection materials would be an asset
• employee management in the orchards and fruit-packing shed
• administration of offshore employees (Spanish would be an asset)
• operation of fruit grading, washing, and sorting equipment
• transporting produce from the orchards and fields to storage facilities (should have a drivers license)
• maintenance of outbuildings (roofing, painting)
• management of a small poultry flock
• repair of farm machinery (if qualified or experienced)
• occasional welding jobs (if qualified or experienced)
• repair of refrigerated cold-storage facilities (if qualified)

The typical work week would vary between 40 hours and 100 hours, depending on the season and the responsibilities of the employee. From mid-June to the end of August most work weeks would be 7 days, with between 10 and 12 hours per day. Some weeks would consist of several consecutive 13 to 14 hour days. The willingness to work on Saturdays and Sundays is absolutely essential. Good physical health and the ability to lift heavy objects are also essential.

Full time work commences in April to early May, and terminates, at the earliest, the day after Labour day in September. Applicants who indicate the willingness to work into mid-to-late October would be at an advantage.
