Andrew is the principal software author and technical director of AustLII. He has degrees in Computing Science and Law. He wrote the sino search engine, the hypertext markup software, and the ysh inferencing engine. Pre-AustLII, Andrew wrote the DataLex Workstation Software, the AIRS free text retrieval engine and the LES legal expert system shell. He teaches and publishes in computerised legal research, computerisation of law and information technology law.
Graham is responsible for funding, publications and obtaining funding. He also has overall responsibility for AustLII's links contents. He has degrees in Arts and Law, and is a Fellow of the Australian Computer Society. He researches and teaches in the areas of intellectual property and cyberspace law and is a long-time privacy advocate, and edits the Privacy Law and Policy Reporter.
Philip is a graduate in Economics and Law from the University of Sydney, with a major in Computer Science. Philip is, with Dan Austin, jointly responsible for AustLII's system administration. In addition to his responsibilities as general AustLII manager Philip manages our primary legal materials, and has developed all of our facilities to automate the receipt and processing of cases and other materials. Philip lectures in computerised legal research at UTS. Philip's position is funded by the Law Foundation of New South Wales. (Appointed Feb 1996)
Russell is continuing AustLII's research into legal inferencing using various tools and techniques.
Daniel has degrees in Law and Computer Science from the Australian National University. He is the main architect of AustLII's targetted web spider and next generation indexing software (Anarchivist). Dan is, with Philip Chung, jointly responsible for AustLII's system administration. He has worked as a consultant for the Commonwealth Attorney-General's Department on internet projects. Dan lectures in computerised legal research at UTS. (Appointed May '97)
Madeleine has a BA Hons (Flinders University of South Australia) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Publishing and Editing (Macquarie University ). She is a qualified editor and indexer specialising in legal indexing including loose-leaf services, academic law books, legal journals, and manuals. She currently works full-time on AustLII's World Law index and lectures in computerised legal research at UTS. Madeleine's position is funded by the Asian Development Bank as part of Project DIAL.
Joseph is currently completing his computer science and law degrees at UTS. He works on our primary legal materials, and particularly on industrial law materials. He also assists with the treaties database. Joseph's position is funded by the Australian Business Chamber. (Appointed Jan '98)
Siobhan is a lawyer by training. She graduated from the University of Tasmania in 1995 and worked at the Antarctic Co-operative Research Centre in Hobart developing a database of international marine treaties. Siobhan spent 1996 and 1997 travelling and is now, having returned to Australia, working on AustLII's secondary materials databases. Siobhan lectures in computerised legal research at UTS.
Siobhan's position is funded by the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation, the Australian Research Council (Collaborative Research grant) and the Australian Human Rights Information Centre. (Appointed Feb '98)
Catherine Thomson (Administrative Assistant, Editorial Support)
Cathy provides editorial support for the AustLII databases and is currently responsible for updating the NSW Supreme Court judgments. She is also responsible for keeping everyone organised and making sure that finances, promotional activities, conferences and so forth work well. In 1999, Cathy developed and organised the second AustLII Conference on the Law and the Internet.
James is currently completing his computer science and law degrees at UTS. He works on our primary legal materials, and particularly on New South Wales materials. James's position is funded by the Law Foundation of New South Wales. (Appointed August '98)
Tom is a joint recipient, with AustLII researchers, of major ARC grants concerning improvements to legal retrieval through user feedback, and on new legal services through legal inferencing. He was one of the principal researchers listed in AustLII's foundation grant.
Ben is completing a PhD on the topic 'Providing sophisticated access to legal information' under the supervision of Tom Gedeon (Supervisor) and Graham Greenleaf (Co-Supervisor). His research is funded in part by the major ARC grant to Gedeon, Greenleaf & Mowbray.
Tim Moore (Honorary Research Associate, Reconciliation and Social Justice project)
Tim is formerly the Secretary to the Council for Aboriginal Reconcilation, and a former Minister for the Environment in the NSW government. He is a Barrister in private practice in Sydney with principal areas of practice interest in (1) Environmental and planning law, (2) Industrial relations and employment law and (3) Parliamentary and electoral law. A UNSW law graduate, he is now a Visiting Fellow in the Faculty. He is working on AustLII's indigenous law project in a voluntary capacity.
